« ILES DE LA SEINE »
Exhibition shown until the 2nd of October 2016

Little is known about the Seine’s islands. From de Aube river all the way to the sea, there used to be more than 300 islands and nowadays there still is around one hundred of them and they constitute an extraordinary archipelago full of myths, travels, utopias and characters.

Its insular condition has a tendency to reinforce the identity of each region, which develop a unique use. The île Olive’s arboretum, the île de la Loge’s model farm, The île aux Cygnes’ airfield, the île Seguin’s show-window factory, the île de Chatou’s impressionists, the île Saint-Etienne’s prison, the île Saint-Denis’ Olympic ambition, the île du Moulin-Joly’s Garden of Eden or the île du Platais’ natural area all form a hybrid, ever changing, complex but coherent landscape.

During the course of a journey that goes upstream and downstream, the exhibition and the book « Îles de la Seine » explore the river and paint the portrait of thirty odd present or past islands, grandiose at times and at times anecdotal, emphasizing on certain selected chapters of their history.
With free admission from the 4th of June to the 2nd of October 2016, the exhibition « Îles de la Seine » is part of the Pavillon de l’Arsenal’s festive summer programming which wished to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the implementation of paid leave.

The goal is to receive over 2000 youths from the leisure centers of the Île-de-France region all throughout the summer and to offer a family programming open to all with tours of the exhibition, treasure hunts, great night cruises explained by tour guides, bike rides and hundreds of passes to go on mini-cruises along the Seine river, from the Pavillon de l’Arsenal to the Eiffel tower, every day during the summer.

While the Seine river is at the very center of important contemporary urban strategies, especially with the call for projects « Réinventer la Seine » (Reinvent the Seine) (Paris – Rouen– Le Havre) launched in March 2016, the event « Îles de la Seine » looks to contribute to the discovery of this metropolitan territory and its unexplored potential.
