Urbanism beyond Rome

 18 February 2010 - 27 March 2010

With the present focus on the future of metropolitan Paris, the exhibition « Rome, Uneternal City » offers a new way of seeing the European city of tomorrow.

Brought together under the direction of Aaron Betsky, architect, critic and director of the Cincinnati Art Museum, twelve teams of international* architects enhance the debate surrounding these typically Roman issues, which today are still ever present: mobility and accessibility; habitat and urban expansion, economy and ecology… Uneternal City provides a unique prospective, showcased by the architects themselves, and with the goal to convey the understanding of the transformation of a contemporary city.

30 years after the traveling exhibition « Roma Interrotta » (1978)**, having offered utopist and random urban insights of the historic city, Uneternal City works out innovative strategies on the basis of redefining the current and future geographical city limits of the Italian capital. Yesterday, Antoine Grumbach Venturi, Robert Krier ou Michael Graves, … Today, BIG, MAD, Nemesi Studio, New West Land or West 8, ... offer their vision for the eternal city. Each team covers contemporary themes addressing the issues at stake today and tomorrow in the Italian capital. Each project explores urban spaces and fabrics, off the beaten path. Uneternal City does not pretend to offer new or futuristic constructions or plans, but rather the search for a different urbanism; one nourished by the energy and life that throbs in the city, and not from the point of abstract planning. Presented, in part, for the first time, at the International Architecture Biennale in Venice, the exhibition Uneternalcity.fr begs to be the starting point for a collaborative laboratory open for studies on the city. One that is “able to engage Italian and international architects and institutions, on a path which allows for redefining new objectives, as well as means of development, be it of one’s own project, or of its financial, or environmental costs.” In welcoming this upcoming exhibition, the Pavillon de l'Arsenal is studying contemporary urban issues of two capital cities, for which history and questions arise on common stakes, allowing both to contribute to the discussion on the city of tomorrow. * BIG / CENTOLA & ASSOCIATI / DELOGU ASSOCIATI / GIAMMETTA & GIAMMETTA / KONING EIZENBERG ARCHITECTURE / LABICS / MAD OFFICE / n!STUDIO / NEMESISTUDIO / NEW WEST LAND COMPANY / T-STUDIO / WEST8 ** ITINERANT EXHIBITION « ROMA INTERROTTA » (1978) COSTANTINO DARDI,ROMALDO GIURGOLA, MICHAEL GRAVES, ANTOINE GRUMBACH, ROBERT KRIER, PAOLO PORTOGHESI, LEON KRIER, ALDO ROSSI, COLIN ROWE, PIERO SARTOGO, JAMES STIRLING, ROBERT VENTURI
