The « European Tower », born at the beginning of the 20th century in the wake of America’s skyscrapers, has developed many specificities in order to find its place in Europe’s towns, which this exposition, and the accompanying book, recount, describe and analyse.
With more than 150 realisations and emblematic projects, the exposition retraces the history of the tower in Europe, lists and analyses its urban, spatial and technical qualities and characteristics, inviting us to discover how nine European metropolises approach the phenomenon in their present and future urban landscapes.
What projects does the future hold in Europe? How are towers built today? In what ways will they be more ecological tomorrow? How will they fit into our towns? Towers of offices, residences, or both? So many questions that must be asked to enlighten debates taking place in Brussels, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Rotterdam and Vienna.
The scenography of the exposition takes us to the 30th floor of an imaginary tower. The landscapes of nine European towns of tomorrow is dramatically present, as in all towers which enjoy an exceptional situation. More than 300 documents, photos, plans, archives and documentary films, as well as 22 models of on-going projects and interactive terminals offering access to the first database of European towers, inform us step by step, image after image, on what makes the richness and the diversity of this architectural model, now a century young.”
