Architects' Exhibition Designs

115 European exhibitions designed by architects

07 July 2006 - 12 November 2006

Inflatable showcases, digital display walls, interactive tables, robot circuits, misappropriation of billboards, videos, projections, levitated structures, organic structures, suspended membranes, acoustic paths, fabric cones,… “Architects Exhibition Design” reviews over one hundred designs of temporary exhibitions produced in Europe in the past ten years by architects from all over the world.

The exhibition both presents and explains the diversity of the exhibition design work by architects: Be it Toyo Ito who takes over the Palladian Basilica in Vicenza (Italy, Un Studio who uses the exhibition “Summer of Love” to unify psychedelic art with the Frankfurt Schirn Kunsthalle (Germany), NOX who impresses a “Vision Machine” onto the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (France), or the young architecture practice AV62 Arquitectos who designs a luminous labyrinth within the majestic setting of the City History Museum of Barcelona (Spain).

Whether it is discrete or spectacular, educational, experimental or manifest, emotional or playful, each design is not only intimately linked with the architectural signature of its author but also reflects the diversity of styles, trends, and evolutionary concepts of an era. For over 15 years, the Pavillon de l’Arsenal has committed the design of its exhibitions to French and international architects. Using architects to design exhibitions means accepting that an architectural character will involve itself with the building, establish and redesign space in order to serve a purpose and to invoke emotions.

The architectural practice Dominique Perrault Architecture produced this bilingual (French/English) exhibition design to be itinerant from the end of 2006.
