Protection and conservation of urban heritage in Beijing : a sustainable model

 18 May 2005 - 05 June 2005

Project Aims:
The identification of a sustainable urban development model for heritage conservation and rehabilitation of an identified historical urban area.

This model, flexible and replicable, will be constructed under the responsibility of the local governments of Rome, Paris and Beijing. It will involve local administrators and experts, the local population and socio-economic actors. The aim of the project will be to demonstrate that it is possible to combine urban development (local economic development), heritage protection (cultural preservation) and social cohesion (maintaining the local population). This model aims to promote a sustainable self-driven development by enhancing specific urban resources, such as historical heritage. Through the implementation of a wider action programme, involving all actors – local population, universities, socio-economic actors – a unique and integrated project will be created to combine the socio-economic objectives with urban heritage preservation/ valorisation and social cohesion. The validation of the replicable model will be the final act of the urban/architectural/socio-economical regeneration process. An exhibit detailing the advancement of the project is being presented at the Pavillon de l'Arsenal from May 18 - 30, 2005.
