YES to renovation, NO to demolition

17 September 2025  Espace Notre Dame, 6 Rue de la Cité, 75004 Paris 4, France

To mark the second half of the HouseEurope! citizens' campaign to make building renovation the new norm in Europe, the Pavillon de l'Arsenal is presenting a striking video installation under the Parvis de la Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, revealing the environmental, social and health impact of building demolition.

While much attention has been focused on the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in December 2024, following its restoration, one might wonder why some buildings are demolished and others renovated. An example that questions the value of buildings according to their degree of heritage. The installation will highlight for the general public the importance of the themes promoted by HouseEurope! themes: encouraging renovation by emphasizing its lower carbon impact than demolition, responding to the housing crisis, enabling the reversibility of buildings and creating a city around existing buildings.
