Vaugirard housing Paris

Christ & Ganteinbein - RATP Habitat

Published in February 2022

Mixing the complexity of the citywith the comfort of high-quality housing, it is a unique combination of infrastruc-ture and urban life, holding the potential to become a new model for subsidizedhousing. As a manifestation of a contemporary strategy to reinvigorate the city, the project’s volume rests on top of an active subway maintenance workshop – afirst in Paris.

Serving as connective tissue in the metropolitan fabric, its presence, modest andhumble but resilient and forward-looking, introduces a new street for Paris, lead-ing through a previously inaccessible part of the city.

The project elegantly complements the traditional Haussmannian street, oscillat-ing between academia and high-end contemporary design. The long façade isperceived as a series of volumes characterized by setbacks and carved-out reces-sions – redents – resulting from typological rigor and richness, where limitationsare observed but simultaneously define a framework for invention.

Inside, residents are offered 110 units on five floors. Four apartment types rangefrom smaller-scale studios to five-room layouts and profit from the building’s par-ticular spatial situation.
