Algocultures

Exhibition and public laboratory of architecture for the construction of bio-facades.

From Dec 07 2013 to Feb 09 2014

During two months, from December 7th, 2013, Pavillon de l'Arsenal transforms its spaces of current events into center of experiment with the project " Algocultures " conceived by the architects of the agency KEPT SILENT X'.

Exhibition and laboratory at the same time, the architects install for the first time their prototype of operational facade urban " of algoculture ". This architecture between biology and physics socializes the living matter " the seaweed " and uses it as an innovative and producing material for the metropolis.

"The bet of the agency XTU and its partners (laboratories, industrialists and start-up) is to develop very innovative technologies today to get this enormous potential and make our cities more sustainable: vertical fields of seaweeds on the facades of our cities, producing buildings of 3rd generation of biomass, valuation of the urban waste in green chemistry, route in algal asphalt, biological solar cells, …"

During all the exposure time, the engineers of AlgoSource Technologies and the researchers of the GEPEA (CNRS)((NATIONAL CENTER FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH)) will measure on the prototype the conditions of cultures  and will analyze the various parameters of the production of seaweeds.

With regard to the innovation and the experiment of this prototype, the XTU agency also reveals concrete proposals developed with actors of the construction and the development that is in Paris, Nanterre, or for the future facades of the power plant of valuation of the household waste of Nantes Métropole (operated by Seché environment), as well as the applications in the field of the biochemistry, the ecological fuels and of the supply in a network of complete production.

This exhibition laboratory takes experience and pedagogy. To make everyone discover this process, Pavillon de l’Arsenal organizes around the event of the meetings with the architects but also the whole team of production of the project " SymBIO2 ". Because XTU gathered a transverse team, gathering the skills of the building (XTU architects, R.F.R engineering consulting firm structures, environmental OASIIS engineering consulting firm), of the algoculture ( AlgoSource Technologies), the process engineering (GEPEA / CNRS(NATIONAL CENTER FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH) / University of Nantes), of the industry (The Dried group Environment and its Speichim Processing subsidiary). The SymBIO2 project explores and models a new urban metabolism in short circuit integrating micro seaweeds into its life cycle.

Pedagogic workshops "Algocultures"
After discovering the exhibition - laboratory " Algocultures " andthe culture of seaweeds on common buildings , children imagine in drawings and in models how the Parisian facades would look like if walls welcome seaweeds...
