Presentation :
The bay house may be likened to living under a large fig tree. Much of it is extremely experimental, the culmination of a search for ultimate ecological sustainability in architecture.

The interior is isolated from the road by a blank high wall which is faced with rustic Kurrajong split face sandstone. The sandstone wall is piggy backed by the crowsnest room which looks west across the main roof and up the harbour. The lookout is supported on five immense triangular bracket plates made of Austen steel. The lookout is of light timber construction which is in contrast with the house.

Past the entry wall the house reveals itself. It is in two halves, with pairs of opposed bluegum timber arches that constitute the bottom chord of a shallow pitched roof. The cantilevered bottom chords are made from five laminated leaves of bluegum held down at their tips by galvanised steel rods. The roof floats like a spreading leafy raft.

The design maximises natural ventilation with a high level of user control. Ventilation devices include windows and doors, high louvres and sliding roof panels. These have been designed in conjunction with the thermal mass which is located at the south side of the house to store heat.

The bay house is intended as a place where people can feel and sense what is happening around them, it is a house that will educate children and talk with the day.
