WHERE DOES ARCHITECTURE BEGIN?
Lesson #04 CONTEXT

By Richard Scoffier, architect, philosoph, professor

The notion of space, which seems fundamental in architecture as prescribed in the majority of manuals and history books, seems to contradict itself today with the concept of context. Context appears to refer to space stripped of its role and representation, a neutral space which finds its meaning at a more profound level than occupying it; it finds it in living and breathing space. This symbolic space is expressed aptly in the housing units developed by Lacaton & Vassal, in the colored spatial substance by James Turrel as well as in the plans by Philippe Rahm where he attempts to play with the metabolic process without involving the conscious.
