Grand Paris Express

BUILD IDENTITY OF NEW METRO

From December 17 2013 to March 02 2014

Société du Grand Paris presents to Pavillon de l’Arsenal an exhibition on construction of the future subway of Big Paris Express. The exhibition shows on the work in progress of the architects trying to define image of the new subway. It is the opportunity to discover the models of studies conceived by Jacques Ferrier, council in architecture of Société du Grand Paris, to invent the spirit of future stations. It also presents to public the retained approach for the architectural design of the industrial sites of maintenance and remisage of the trains and returns on 11 architects asked to build the stations of the line 15 south of Grand Paris Express.

More than a century after the construction of the subway, among which the white vault with beveled tiles and the kiosks Guimard became symbolic elements of the landscape and the Parisian heritage, Société du Grand Paris sets up tools to build the identity of the new subway lines of Grand Paris Express. These tools testify of a will to open and to diversify the architectural command, to insert better still the subway into territories, while protecting a family resemblance, an image, an identity peculiar to the whole new network.

The charter of architecture designed by Jacques Ferrier has to favor the emergence of human and urban stations, among which the insertion and the influence will be increased by the construction of new districts, and in particular housing, around certain stations. This charter bases itself on the uses and the putting on the alert directions of the travelers. She develops a number of objectives of treatment of the light, of sounds, of materials which must be implemented on the route of the travelers by the architects masters of work of the various stations.

On the line 15 in the south of Grand Paris Express, the architects asked to build stations were selected last summer. It is up to they to apply Jacques Ferrier's architectural charter and to watch, just like the themes and the variations of a melody, that the network expresses an identity of set, where every station is a singular project, anchored in its context, which are like all other stations.

Grand Paris Express will be also marked out by industrial sites of maintenance and remisage of the trains which will have to become integrated into the fast-changing territories of the Ile-de-France. Carriers of innovation and durability, their conception will cross surrounding areas of the engineering, urban planning and architecture. The architectural expression of industrial sites is transversely worn by an architectural and landscaped charter elaborated by the cabinet Barton Willmore.

The exhibition is organized around six themes - the construction of an identity, a sensory approach of the station, the station and its practices, the atmosphere of the quay, the contextual stations, the urban development and the integration of the industrial sites in their territory - presented and explained through new models, plans, videos and cartoon movies.
