Paris at night

Night chronicles

23/05-06/10 Scientific curator: AWP (Marc Armengaud, Matthias Armengaud, Alessandra Cianchetta)

“Paris by Night” reveals the city, by day as well as its nocturnal works, a phantom history bathed in darkness, untold and yet consisting of emblematic figures, unique architecture and multiple usages.
“Paris by Night” bases itself on the city’s nocturnal state, a dreamlike, surprising, varied liberated and mysterious state.

Aristocratic nights in the left turnips, the open-air dance halls in the discotheques, the lamplighters to the maintenance technicians of the subway, the Palais-Royal in amusement parks, the World Fairs in trade shows, drugstores, tenpin bowlings and cinemas of the modernity in the contemporary showrooms, the metropolitan night evolved in its places and in its vocabulary. Aristocrats, chests of drawers, dandies, architects, surrealists, futurists, Apache, workers, party animals, taggers, visitors or employees …
Every generation reinvented its night-practices, making of this space of freedom the mirror of the society. More than two years of researches were necessary for the conception by Marc Armengaud, philosopher and town planner, of this exhibition and the work, which accompanies it. Two years to aggregate a unique and singular, underestimated or familiar set, but also to try, thanks to the collected data and to the sensitive analysis of the territory, to map the reality, the practices and the possible of our night-metropolis.
Sheltered under a spectacular installation conceived by architect and engineer Daniel Vaniche, the exhibition « Paris la nuit » proposes to everyone discovery of this wealth little known through two hundred and fifty works, through historic movies, through forward-looking scenarios and through hundred cards. This unpublished atlas makes visible and understandable the night of today to the large scale with its practices and users, its networks and infrastructures, its singular spatiality, thought or not.
For the mapped first time, this night-metropolis shows itself as a horizon of development and attractiveness, which redistributes the cards of the use, the culture or the tourism.

From the memorable nights at raves, open-air parties, the street light attendants, to the metro maintenance staff from Paris Royal to the amusement parks, the world fairgrounds to the trade shows, from the drugstores, bowling alleys and cinemas to showrooms, Parisian nights have evolved both in their settings as well as in their context. Aristocrats, hobos, playboys, architects, surrealists, futurists, Apaches, blue and white collar workers, party revelers, spray painters and tourists have all given their own unique definition to the night and allowed it to mirror society in its moment. Two years of research by Marc Armengaud, philosopher and town planner were required to create this exhibition and its accompanying catalogue. Two years were required to fine tune a unique and defining exhibition as well as to map nocturnal Paris, its uses and the opportunities Daniel Vaniche, architect and engineer designed a spectacular installation to house the exhibition consisting of two hundred fifty literary works, historical films, pamphlets and hundreds of maps. This unprecedented collection reveals the night on a grand scale and sheds light on its usages and users, its network and infrastructure, its singular spatiality. It is the first time Parisian nights have been mapped out and delineate a horizon of both development and attraction. This unique view reshuffles the culture and tourism cards. From May 23 to October 6, 2013, the Pavillon de l’Arsenal will be on night duty! “Paris by Night” incorporates nighttime walks to discover the metro network during maintenance hours, visits to the Rungis market, discover the Esplanade de la Défense as well as guided nocturnal visits to the exhibition and speeches. The “Nuit Blanche 2013”, will mark the closure of the exhibition with an “interactive nocturnal atlas” which will contain 18,000 photos taken in the preceding year. 5,000 nighttime visits to the Pavillon de l’Arsenal are expected.
