Comparison between six projects in France and six projects elsewhere in Europe

Housing Platform 2008 was born of a simple observation: housing in France is too expensive, even more so than in other European countries, while being less comfortable and durable. Why, and especially how, should we move forward? How are we to satisfy the market and improve the quality of accommodation at the beginning of the 21st century, a period characterised by the urgent need to speed up the construction of housing and a complex economic crisis?

To find answers to those questions, an ‘exchange platform’ was held on the initiative of ING Real Estate Development, France, and with the active participation of the Pavillon de l’Arsenal. It focused on 12 recent comparable realisations of collective housing in Europe. 70 professionals worked, deciphered and analysed those projects, along with 12 architects, project managers and teams, contractors and builders. Also were present the firms, planners and politicians concerned, so permitting the integration of their contribution to the analysis in the conclusions of this forum.

‘Housing Platform’ is a first; an opportunity for rich and fertile exchange, a pragmatic contribution to a subject that is fundamental for all citizens, especially those living in Ile de France.
But much yet remains to be said, there will be more ‘Housing Platforms’. This book recounts the first works and presents a synthesis. As you will discover, several possible paths of action were identified and made available to the various actors attempting to find a way out of the vicious circle in which housing seems to be trapped.
Our warm thanks go to all the participants. We hope readers will find in these pages a useful contribution.
